At Jersey Mutual, as the home of home insurance, we pride ourselves on insuring your island, ensuring it’s looked after. As soon as we heard about the new GROW project by Thrive Jersey, we wanted to know more and how we could get involved. The community project looks to create interconnectedness between human wellbeing and the natural environment. So far, the team have been busy planting fruit trees and pollinating flowers.
There are many different elements to this fantastic initiative. We love that this space offers a home from home, helping people who may have lost their purpose or feel isolated to find a support network of friendly neighbours, all working together to make a difference. The first project that we are supporting the team with is providing homes for the local wildlife, including bug mansions, hedgehog houses and hawk homes.
We have been so impressed by the GROW teams creativity and enthusiasm in creating a positive, proactive force for good, for people and the planet. We wanted to share this with you, encouraging you to get out into your gardens, no matter how big or small, to explore and discover wildlife.
Why not build your own homes for nature to enjoy? Whether you want to create a classy bird box or something fun with the kids, you can get as creative as you like.
Here are some examples of things you can use to create your luxury homes: stacked wood, palettes, rolled paper, cardboard tubes, sticks, leaves, pinecones, hay, bamboo; you can drill different sized holes into wood – anything that makes tiny spaces for the animals and bugs to live. They are not fussy about aesthetics, but if you want to create something beautiful, then I’m sure that you won’t get any complaints from your new lodges living rent-free!
Creatures may take a little while to discover your new creation, so be patient. When visitors come, you could record them in a diary and even draw/take pictures.
We have a photography competition at the moment to capture your real home; well, it doesn’t get more real than this. Why not enter your photos on our website to be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend on camera gear (or an extension for your hedgehog house?)
